Food: Culture, Baby Carrots and Bento Boxes

1. And the Americanization of this batch of second generation Asian Americans is complete.

Two weeks ago, my friend--let's call her Sara--offered a group of preschoolers-and-older children black sticky rice pudding. Sara gave each kid a spoonful and asked them to "just try it."
Girl #1: *diplomatic grin* "We don't like this. Can we have goldfish crackers please?"

Girl #2: "I want Oreos!"

Boy #1: "Brownies!"

Sara's 1.5-y.o. daughter liked it, and Girl #2 shoved her plate across the table. "I don't want it. You eat it."

Granted, Sara should have heated up the dish and served it with coconut milk (It's not black sticky rice pudding without coconut milk!111), but it made me sad that they rejected the dish outright as being unfamiliar.

Food is so intertwined with Asian culture, and I'm not sure what to think of Asian Americans who are cut off not only from their grandparents' language, but also Asian food.
...and greasy Chinese take-aways are not Chinese food X_x;;

P.S. I do find it all sorts of awesome that Girl #1 has perfectly combined Asian "Respect your elders" with American "Be polite and diplomatic to get what you want." X-D

2. I knew there was a reason why I don't like baby carrots.
[T]he cute baby carrots found in the supermarket are not a variety grown by nature but rather the product of technology. They are formed by a machine that cuts them out from full sized older carrots and in some cases, puts green food colouring at the "stem" end for further effect. --Carrots

And:
The success of baby carrots speaks to two things about American culture that sort of bug me:
1. The desire for food that is uniform in appearance and taste.
2. The desire for food to be sterile, already prepared and washed, and packaged for quick, mindless eating.
--Dickson, Andrea. Baby Carrots - The Frugal Idea That Isn't

I don't know why the fact that they don't have a yellow center didn't clue me in D:
This is why I'd rather buy fresh carrots, wash, peel and slice. No wonder baby carrots aren't tender at all O_o

***

3. Food is not only about taste, but also presentation. Especially Japanese food.
(Chinese food, for the most part, is a slapdash stir-fry "It's fresh and steaming hot. EAT IT." thing.)

Yes, I've seen beautiful creative arrangements in generic plastic containers. No, throw-some-food-together in a bento box does not mean it's bento.

But the bento box is part of the presentation. Beautiful food arrangement in a generic plastic box = beautiful food arrangement in a generic plastic box. I'm not Japanese but I'm elitist on the subject, 'kay? =/
Also, you can get a bento box for as low as $1.50. (Ichiban Kan, Daiso)

(I always ask for a bowl & a pair of chopsticks at Chinese restaurants. I eat Chinese/Japanese/Korean noodles in a bowl with chopsticks* and spaghetti on a plate with a fork. I drink coffee in a mug and rice wine in a sake cup. Yes, I'm OCD about the strangest things.)
* I actually go one step further and eat Korean noodles with metal chopsticks. I don't own a Korean long-handled spoon though.

Smut Love for every holiday: A regular holiday-a-thon community

The stories posted at holidaysmut are mostly original slash, but fanfic, femmeslash and het are also welcome. Using HP fandom's smut-o-meter, a lot of the stories I've seen are in the PG-13 range. (If I'm looking at the tamer stories, by all means, someone link me to the NSFW ones =P)

To quote the mod:
[A]ny rating is welcome, too. Despite the comm name, we definitely value romance over smut, so it doesn't have to be smut. Smut is, of course, welcome.^_^

Also, as long or short as you want, poetry or prose or art, all welcome.

And most importantly for me (and I suspect for many of you procrastinating writers out there), the challenges never expire. All the challenges can be found on this tag.

Some challenges that I'm toying brainstorming and/or writing for: Ten for now )

Bento = ♥

ETA 5:50 p.m.: Didn't realize Lunch in a Box has a Bento of the month contest. Will have to check the forum from time to time. This might push me into using my bento supplies =P Didn't realize how effective competition is for me, heh.

I've been reading this funny shoujo manga called Otomen (a play on the words "otome" (maiden / young lady) and "men"), and this bento scene = <3
♥ alligator sausages
♥ little chickie quail eggs
◆ round onigiri + goma (sesame seed) + ume (sour plum)
♥ tofu money bags
◆ cabbage rolls + flower food pick
♥ thin renkon (lotus root) & cucumber (?) slices
◆ broccoli floret filler + a bed of shredded cabbage (?)

♥ apple rabbits
◆ strawberries

✔ Participated in Life Without Plastic metal bento box giveaway on Adventures in Bentomaking (March 31st deadline)

Considering how many times I drop my water bottle on my toes, changing it into steel =/= good idea =P
I’ve stopped using plastic silverware. I pledge to phase out my plastic spatula, cooking utensils etc. and replace them with bamboo =)
Gotta check the price next time I pass by That Kitchen Shop.

✔ Participated in [info]jewelmaker's bento bag & belt giveaway (March 31st deadline)

✔ Participated in [info]ss_biggie's Kids Konserve metal lunch kit giveaway (deadline: Thursday, April 2)

Problem with metal boxes? You can't microwave them* =/
Chinese people use metal lunch canisters because you can then put them directly on the stove to make the food piping hot. Whereas here in the U.S. it's more likely that your workplace provides you with a microwave instead of a stove =P

*Granted you're not supposed to microwave your plastic bento boxes either so that they last longer...But people do it anyway =P

My imaginary meal, let me show you it. )

Fandom content tomorrow, mmmkay?

The Ones Where Merlin Is a Thief

1. Miss The Train Before by fahye (1/? WIP, modern-day AU, currently PG)
"I'd like to see you lift a wallet."

"What?" Merlin's throat seized up.

Gaius gave him the look from the previous night, the one which questioned Merlin's intelligence. "We're in a crowd. The conditions are ideal. Surely Hunith taught you…" He trailed off at the look on Merlin's face. "Or not. I revise my earlier opinion; your mother is either very stupid, or even smarter than I thought."

"Hey!" said Merlin, and then, "What?" again.

"Very sneaky of her, to stick you under my nose and flaunt your lack of basic education." Gaius waggled a plastic cup at him sternly. "I most certainly did not intend to spend my retirement running a school for amateurs, but I suppose I have no choice now. Very well. Watch closely."

It started in SINGAPORE guys. And Gaius runs a Chinese herbal remedies shop X-D
And it's all Mission Impossible-like, except hacker!Merlin is hired for a job to steal EXCALIBUR =DDD
There's Gwen and Lancelot (to come) and what more do you want?

2. Merlin Superhero (Lupin III) by solanyxe
Or, the fanvid that made me start this category.

Lupin III is a classic 1970s anime and that's all you need to know, really.

The fanvid has plot! (Summarized from vidder's description)
Merlin, Gwen, and Morgana are making plans to steal Arthur's sword. As Merlin ends in the jail, Gwen and Morgana steal around. Arthur tries to get his sword back, but he accidentally becomes Merlin's fangirl. Merlin returns the sword in the end, and Arthur joins the thieving group.

[info]morrighan_sai, I totally spied the link from your comments section.

Just added #4 and #5 to The Ones Where Arthur is Vicious (But It's All for Merlin)

Next Installment:
- The Ones Where Uther Scares Merlin Like a Very Scary Thing
- The Ones Where Merlin and/or Arthur is Dark/Evil

And here's where I ask you for your Thief!Merlin recs =) (Or, you know, Thief!Arthur if such fics exist. *makes grabby hands*)

Happy Hina Matsuri, F-list \o/
Yesterday, I made uni sushi and it was good NOM NOM NOM. I would've bought sakura mochi but I don't like it enough to justify the price. Also, not my cultural tradition, haha.

Links of cute & Bento stuff

(Or, sometimes material goods can purchase happiness.)

Teh cute:

:♥: Hammie chorus *_*
:♥: The Mostly Unconscious Adventures of Bug the Rat
:♥: White Ferret \o/
:♥: Vegetable love (the non-pervy kind)
Isn't it great that I have to specify vegetable love as "non-pervy"?
Haha
:♥: Random: Shuriken magnets

I felt like a traitor shopping at the Evil Disney Empire (TM), but they have a 3 for $10 sale for their meal ware and I can't resist. (Regular price = $5.50 each)

Yesterday I bought:
✔ a green fairies bento (for myself)
✔ a red princess bento (either for my friend's daughter or my niece)
(Both can be seen here)
✔ a red Mickey, Donald, Goofy bento (for River when he's big enough)
✔ a Minnie-Pluto-Mickey-Donald fork & spoon set
✔ an EVE bowl
✔ a WALL-E and EVE fork & spoon set

If they've made a WALL-E bento box it would've been so appropriate *_*

Bentos that I love but can't justify buying for as long as there are Daiso and Ichiban-Kan around:
:♥: Japan + Russian nesting dolls = AWESOME
:♥: With matching bag and chopsticks.
:♥: I love the wolf in this Red Riding Hood bento.

MOAR why-so-expensive stuff:
* Condiment drawing pencils. Cut a corner of a Ziploc bag? Not as environmentally-friendly, I suppose.
* How to use chopsticks game. Erm, I can always use real dried beans?
