Multi-fandom fanfic recs, from my extensive lurking years
(After I have an LJ, that is. Didn't bother saving links before LJ.)

Originally a tl;dr comment on syllic's post.

1. Don't you wish we have glasses that serve as a computer screen, and it tracks our eyeball movements so it scrolls down automatically as we read fanfic discreetly everywhere?
On the train, on the bus, in the car and on the road. In the market, on the run, in those meetings that're ho-hum.

2. I personally can't get into fanfic if I know zilch about the original source (Smallville and Merlin don't count because d-uh, everyone knows smth about Superman and King Arthur). Because fanfic always assumes some prior knowledge of canon.
And I need to know who is this Castiel guy and what is he doing sexxing up Dean, and is this Castiel person taller than Sam, older than sin, and have pretty pouty lips? And does he have wings? Is he an angel, a devil, incubus, what?
(Am not in the SPN fandom. Only watched the first four eps of SPN. Gave up.)

3. You should read Megan Whalen Turner's The Thief, The Queen of Attolia & The King of Attolia. It's children's book/YA/history-religious fantasy/THIEF. Because they are awesome (as awesome as Good Omens, in a different genre kind of way) and you can read them ON THE TRAIN/BUS/SUBWAY/PUBLIC TRANSPORT.

Multi-fandom recs grouped by fandoms:

:♥: My Itty Bitty Recs masterlist (mostly Harry/Draco or Draco-centric)
Or, HP fandom is too massive, so I only rec 3-5 fics per category.

:♥: Hibiscus by [info]megyal (HP, Harry/Draco, ~7.3 K, Angst, PG)
Summary: Too short a time in paradise.
At first the fic reads like AU or de-aging, but it's not.

:♥: hollycomb's This Year's Love (HP, AS/S, R, complete)

:♥: the one in which Lex Luthor has numerous superhero identities:
Elseworlds (or Five Secret Identities Lex Luthor and Clark Kent Never Had) by bagheera_san
Part One: Old Friends (Xavier!Lex & Magneto!Kal-El)
Part Two: Two Sides Of A Coin (Two-faced!Lex i.e. w00bie ;_;)
Part Three: I Shall Become (Batman!Lex, Nightwing/Robin!Clark)
Part Four: Escape Velocity (Flash!Lex)

:♥: Also, iHero by Bernice (aka super-long, plotty Superhero!Lex.)

:♥: rageprufrock's Conner fic (Smallville, Clex background), Conflicts of Interest and its sequels.
Bonus point: Conner Luthor wrote that Vanity Fair article in the end of Drastically Redefining Protocols

:♥: "My Big Fat Alien Wedding" by [info]mahaliem (Smallville, Clex, PG-13)
Summary: The story of Clark and Lex's courtship and wedding.
Supermanland! Meteor Minefield! Carousel of Mutants! Alien Cave of Love! Michael Jackson references!

:♥: the one in which Aziraphale and Crowley are Ezra and Tony, two Jewish h00manz: Ordinary People by [info]daegaer (Good Omens)
And her WW1!Crowley fics.

* Bonus rec: This was written before BBC Merlin *g* But you can read it as HP/Merlin x-over, haha.
"The Misadventures of Merlin Malfoy" by [info]wandmaker (HP, Draco gen)
Summary: And you thought Draco Malfoy had an ego problem before? Just wait till he discovers his identity from a previous life!

It's cute like a very cute thing that you can't bring yourself to drown.

*cackles* I can't resist that descrip, must read!

And I would agree about needing some prior knowledge of canon except that I initially got into SGA through the fanfic when I had no access to TV. I did have someone carefully pick fics that stood on their own. But I agree it doesn't work all the time. (And ditto on SPN! I watched half a season and still have no idea why people love it so. To each his own.)

But I do think people who don't know this incarnation of Merlin might have a hard time with it, since it is such a different take than anything that's come before.

IMO our Merlin would've been sorted into Slytherin, although he's often as rash & unthinking as a Gryffindor. Ditto Morgana =D

The SPN brothers aren't pretty enough to make up for the urban legend @ week plot =P
(Whereas Clex is pretty enough to make up for the crazy meteor mutant @ week. Ditto Merlin/Arthur and evil magic user @ week.)

I actually got into SV and Merlin before watching the show. My first SV fanfic & first Merlin fanfic were both by [info]mahaliem =D (Humor's more accessible to the non-fan probably)

It was kinda funny because I pictured Gaius as a Roman centurion/someone with presence/in their 30s. And I pictured Gwen as a blond wench who's devoted in love with Merlin (Didn't see the Guinevere ref., of course). I pictured Merlin as a kind-hearted innocent all starry-eyed at Arthur. And I pictured Arthur as more of an unflexible toff than he is in the series *g*
